Met Morten at fitness.dk near Svanemoellen station, and worked out for an hour and a half. Then shopping and lunch at Frederiksberg. Went sailing with Bernard from 1730 to 2030 (very little wind, but nice and sunny) in Oeresund, and played Risk! with him and Lars at Lars' place till 00:30. Sadly, Bernard won.

Took bus number 48 from Christianshavn to Refhalevej, and walked the last 500 meter to Sailing Club Lynetten, where Bernard had promised to give me a tour in his 24 feet Drabant. Taking off at 1730, the wind was fresh from north east, some 8-10 m/s, and there were small waves but nothing uncomfortable, though we did get wet (but that's part of the fun). Were safely back in harbour at 1930.

So a reporter from Danish tabloid Ekstrabladet used a co-worker's social security number to withdraw money from the co-worker's bank account, order military papers, an extract from the Danish Crime Register, and health history from the co-worker's GP. The secretary at the GP said: this is normal procedures, if you have somebody's social security number, then you have the code to his entire life. Get this right: social security numbers are not (supposed to be) secret! It's a unique identification number which every Danish citizen has, but the number is not secret! Unfortunately more and more public instances (the above mentioned, for example) believe that if you know somebody's social security number, then you are that person! The only way to cure this is for the state to publish a total list with everybody's social security number so everybody can see everybody's social security number - and then make sure everybody know that this is happening (but I'm sure that'll happen automatically - the newspapers will be quick to put this on the frontpages). That moment the numbers will definately loose whatever authentication value some people thought they had and it will be clear to everybody that they should not be used to ensure people's identity.

Fools. Of course Turkey is not ready to join EU now. There are many things which they should improve; mention the bad economy, lack of human rights, high level of corruption etc. But to say that they should never become member is really stupid. If and when they fulfill the requirements then of course they should be a member. It can take years - 20 years maybe, but when fulfilling the requirements, well, then they are fulfilling the requirements and there should be nothing stopping them from joining. Saying now that they can never join is bad also because it will disencourage them to try to fulfill the requirements - they then have nothing to work towards. Look at Spain or Portugal or Italy 40 years ago. They were really not your ideal EU member state, but they improved and have prospered and are now rich (well, richer at least) and full and valued EU members. Of course Turkey can, should, and will become that as well. Expanding the borders of EU means having more countries as your friend, as your ally, increasing the distance to countries which are not your friend. Turkey will act as a buffer between the rest of EU and the Middle East. Definately a good thing.

It's unfortunate that I saw so much TV the first quarter of 2004. We're already in week 21, and I have only read 18 novels so far. I'm halfway through Midnight's children and really want to finish it now. Also Jesper lent me Auster's Oracle night, which I need to read soon. Hopefully I can finish the former this week.

I thought I could go early to bed, but unfortunately one of the GS160's lost an HBA, and the emulex driver got so upset, that the CPU panicked, taking the entire server down, around 2130. And since it turned out that I am the Unix duty officer this week (I had forgotten), I ended up spending the night not in my bed, but in the server room trying to coordinate things with Supervision, the DBA duty officer, the team-storage duty officer, and the dispatched technician from HP, so the system could come up running again. It did, around 04 in the morning, and I was home sleeping at 0430. Luckily I had no meetings before noon Tuesday, or I would have been completely wasted! What an annoying way to start the week :-(

And now I run Wi-Fi as well. Zyxel G1000 AP. I couldn't make the WFA authentication work right away, so for now I just use 128 bit WEP and MAC address enforcement. That's not as cool as it could have been but it will have to suffice for the time being. Sitting in the garden... Mmmm... this has suddenly increased the motivation to work from home a great deal!

I now have 512/512 Mb ADSL connection from home, provided by Cybercity, paid for by Orange. Initial test shows upload with 50KB/s which is as expected. Now I just need the WLAN AP and NIC...
